7 Days Epic Wildlife Safari in Kenya

Embarking on a safari that encompasses Meru National Park, Samburu Reserve, Mt. Kenya National Park, and Ol Pejeta Conservancy promises an extraordinary journey through Kenya's diverse landscapes and wildlife. Meru National Park, famed for its lush landscapes and abundant wildlife, offers glimpses of elephants, lions, and diverse bird species.

Samburu Reserve, set against a rugged backdrop, is home to unique species like Grevy's zebras and reticulated giraffes. The towering peaks of Mount Kenya National Park provide an awe-inspiring backdrop as you explore its rich montane forests and wildlife.
Ol Pejeta Conservancy stands out for itsconservation efforts, housing the last two northern white rhinos. Together, these destinations offer an immersive safari experience, blending the beauty of nature with the thrill of wildlife encounters.

Day 1: Nairobi – Meru National Park

Pick up from your hotel and drive to Meru National Park. This remarkable park is situated in the lowlands of northeastern Kenya, nestled beneath the Nyambeni hills. Meru National Park is part of a larger contiguous wilderness area along the Tana River, which also includes the Bisanadi and Mwingi National Reserves, Kora National Park, and Rahole National Reserve.

The northwestern region of the park, characterized by its hilly terrain and fertile volcanic soils, receives more rainfall, making it a lush and verdant oasis. Numerous perennial streams crisscross the park, while three substantial rivers—namely, the Tana to the south, the Ura to the southwest, and the Rojeweru to the east—gracefully traverse this expansive reserve.

Meru National Park gained fame through the writings of Joy Adamson, renowned for her book "Born Free," which recounts the true story of Elsa, the lioness, and her remarkable journey to reclaim her place in the wild. Evening will be spent in your booked lodge.

Day 2: Meru National Park

Second day of your exhilarating game drive in this diverse habitat, you can anticipate encountering a wealth of wildlife. Meru boasts an impressive list of over 400 bird species, ensuring captivating birdwatching opportunities. Among the creatures you are likely to spot are baboons, buffalo, bushbuck, duiker, eland, elephants, gazelles, genets, gerenuks, giraffes, hartebeests, and hippos.

Additionally, the park is home to a wide range of other animals, including hyenas, hyraxes, impalas, jackals, kudus, lions, mongooses, vervet monkeys, oribis, oryx, steenboks, sunis, warthogs, waterbucks, and zebras. With a bit of luck, you may also catch sight of some rarer species such as wild dogs, aardwolves, bush babies, caracals, cheetahs, civets, dik-diks, leopards, otters, pangolins, bush pigs, porcupines, ratels, reedbucks, black and white rhinos, servals, shrews, and squirrels.

Day 3: Meru National Park – Drive to Samburu Game Reserve

In the morning, we set out on a road journey towards the Samburu Game Reserve, situated in the rugged, semi-desert region of the North. Samburu Game Reserve is a pristine and less-explored wilderness, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and a unique array of wildlife not commonly found in the southern regions of Kenya. Here, you can expect to encounter the reticulated giraffe, a distinctive and striking subspecies, as well as the rare Grevy's zebra with its prominent, furry ears. The graceful gerenuk antelope, known for its unusual habit of standing on its hind legs to reach for foliage, adds to the park's charm. You'll also spot Somali ostriches, easily identifiable by their distinct blue legs.

Upon our arrival at the lodge, a sumptuous lunch awaits us. Following this, we embark on an exciting "Spice" game drive, immersing ourselves in the captivating landscapes and wildlife that make Samburu Game Reserve a truly unique destination.

Day 4: Explore Samburu Game Reserve

Full day in Samburu with morning and afternoon ‘Spice’ game drives. You may see Elephants, Cheetah, Leopard, Eland, Oryx, Impala, Dikdik, Waterbuck and a variety of birds. This lava plain includes a varied landscape of red dirt, thorn scrub, broken volcanic rock, dried river beds, steep hills and rocky outcroppings.

Following the river’s curves, a forest of Doum Palms, Acacia and tamarind is a magical contrast of cool green. Other areas of the Reserve include the Uaso Nyiro River where crocodiles sunbathe themselves on the banks. It also provides an oasis for a variety of game. Birds are abundant, with 365 species recorded, one for every day of the year. In between the game drives, there is an opportunity to visit a Samburu village at an additional cost.

Day 5: Samburu Game Reserve – Drive to Mount Kenya Safari Club

Our safari continues on to the serene and refreshing Kenyan highlands, where we'll find the iconic Mount Kenya Safari Club nestled amidst more than 100 acres of meticulously landscaped gardens. This distinguished resort promises an experience of unparalleled refinement and luxury, exuding a hint of old Hollywood glamour from its storied past.

The resort boasts a comprehensive array of amenities that align with the standards of a top-tier international establishment. These include opportunities for horseback riding, golf, croquet, practicing your putting skills on the green, engaging in a friendly match of bowling, enjoying table tennis, taking a refreshing dip in the pool, indulging in a pampering session at the beauty salon, paying a visit to an animal orphanage, trying your hand at tennis, or even exploring tranquil trout streams, among other activities.

Our stay here is marked by fine dining, where culinary excellence meets warm hospitality, complemented by the impeccable accommodations provided in the form of suites or charming cottages. This epitomizes the essence of our sojourn at the Mount Kenya Safari Club.

Day 6: Mount Kenya Safari Club – Drive to Sweetwaters Game Sanctuary/ Ol Pejeta

This morning, our adventure leads us to the captivating Sweetwaters Game Reserve. This expansive territory, encompassing both the Ol Pejeta Conservancy and its opulent ranch, was formerly the exclusive domain of the renowned multi-millionaire, Adnan Kashoggi.

During our visit, we have the privilege of exploring the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a charming haven established in collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute, with the noble mission of providing a secure refuge for orphaned chimpanzees. Additionally, we venture into the specially secured and fenced sanctuary dedicated to black rhinoceros, where an impressive population of forty individuals thrives. Notably, this area includes a salt lick, ensuring that our encounters with these majestic creatures are virtually guaranteed and exceptionally close.

Whether we choose to partake in daytime or nighttime game drives, embark on a camel trek, engage in the thrilling pursuit of lion tracking, relish outdoor dining experiences, or simply unwind by the pool, Sweetwaters presents us with a plethora of delightful opportunities. The reserve is celebrated for its exceptional wildlife viewing, boasting the highest ratio of wildlife to land area of any park or reserve in Kenya.

Day 7: Sweetwaters Game Sanctuary – Drive to Nairobi

Begin your day with an early morning 'Spice' game drive in the enchanting Sweetwaters. Afterward, enjoy a hearty breakfast before commencing your journey back to Nairobi, where you'll arrive in the early afternoon.
