7 Days 6 Nights Rongai Route
Kilimanjaro Trekking

7 Days 6 Nights Rongai Route Kilimanjaro Trekking
1 Pax $2290 | 2 Pax $2073

The Rongai route ascends Mount Kilimanjaro from the northeastern side, tracing the border between Tanzania and Kenya, retaining an untouched wilderness ambiance.
As the sole route approaching Kilimanjaro from the north, the Rongai route stands out as one of the more secluded and wild trails on the mountain. Despite its remoteness, it presents numerous advantages to trekkers, making it an enticing choice for those seeking a distinctive experience on Africa's tallest peak.

Due to its remote character, the Rongai Route ranks among the least frequented trails on Mount Kilimanjaro. Those opting for this path can enjoy tranquility for much of the trek, encountering few fellow climbers until reaching Kibo Camp, where the trail converges with the Marangu Route for the final ascent to the summit.

Prior to this juncture, travelers often find themselves alone on the trail for hours or even days, making the Rongai Route an excellent option for those desiring solitude in a unique wilderness setting. The Rongai route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro with a gradual, steady ascent, allowing hikers to acclimatize at a manageable pace. This not only positions it as one of the more manageable routes up the mountain but also significantly enhances the success rate. The trail presents few major obstacles, and the day before summit day is relatively short, providing trekkers an opportunity to rest, recover, and prepare for the climb to Uhuru Peak.

Starting on the north side of the mountain, near the border with Kenya, the Rongai Route is also the driest trail on Kilimanjaro. This makes it a favorable choice for year-round trekking, especially during the rainy season in April and May when most rainstorms tend to linger on the southern side of the mountain. Rongai hikers, therefore, experience drier and warmer conditions compared to those on more popular trails.

Additional advantages of selecting the Rongai Route include the potential to encounter wildlife, including Colobus Monkeys, in the initial days of the climb. The strategically spaced campsites along the route ensure a balanced amount of time spent on the trail each day. Moreover, the trail's unique ascent from the north and descent from the south provides travelers with distinct perspectives of Kilimanjaro.

While some critics argue that the Rongai Route may not be as visually stunning as other trails up Mt. Kilimanjaro, its scenery, although less varied, still offers plenty to appreciate. The scarcity of fellow trekkers allows for a more immersive experience, enabling climbers to soak in the surroundings. Climbing Kilimanjaro presents the Rongai Route as a 7-day climb or a 6 or 7-day private climb, with the six-day variation omitting an acclimatization day on day four at Mawenzi Tarn.

Day 1: Nale Muru – Simba Camp

Embark on the adventure with a scenic drive through villages and coffee plantations, arriving at the captivating wooden village of Nale Moru on the northeast side of the mountain. Here, you meet with the porters who will accompany you on your journey. The initial segment of the trail winds through a lush rainforest, transitioning to a drier environment on the north side. As you ascend, you'll soon find yourself in the heather zone. Spend the night at the First Cave Camp (Simba Camp), resting in a tent at an altitude of approximately 9,300 feet. Simba Camp, situated near the First Cave, offers a splendid view of the Kenyan plains.
- Hiking: 4-5 hours
- Overnight Altitude: 9,300 feet

Day 2: Simba Camp – Second Cave

Today’s stage begins in the morning with a steady climb up to Second Cave. The route takes in a long stretch of heath, distinguished by heather, wild flowers and stony paths. As you walk, you can enjoy the view of Kibo and the east-facing glaciers on the crater rim. After lunch you will leave the main trail and continue along a narrower path towards the jagged peaks of Mawenzi. You will finally reach ‘Second Cave’, which is located in a sheltered valley close to Kikelewa Caves and surrounded by giant senecio plants.
- Hiking: 3-4 hours
- Overnight Altitude: 11,300

Day 3: Second Cave – Third Cave

This day is dedicated to acclimatization, enhancing your prospects of reaching the summit and minimizing the risk of altitude sickness. Take the morning to unwind and appreciate the natural surroundings. By midday, embark on a journey away from the camp, traversing the heath along a narrow path toward the rugged peaks of Mawenzi and Third Cave.
- Hiking: 3-4 hours
- Overnight Altitude: ~11,811

Day 4: Third Cave – Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Embark on today's leg of the journey, guiding you to Mawenzi Tarn Hut. Following a brief yet steep climb up the grassy mountainside, a stunning panoramic view awaits as your well-earned reward. The heathland gradually transitions to rocky highlands, scattered with both large and small volcanic boulders, serving as remnants of past volcanic activity. After a few additional hours on the trail, you'll arrive at the site of your overnight stay, positioned in a valley between the majestic spires of Mawenzi.
- Hiking: 4-5 hours
- Overnight Altitude: 14,160 feet.

Day 5: Mawenzi Tarn Hut – Kibo Huts

Embark on a walk through the almost lunar landscape known as 'The Saddle,' connecting Mawenzi and Kibo. Upon reaching Kibo Huts, nestled at the base of the Kibo crater wall, prepare your equipment and warm clothing for the upcoming trek to the peak. Ensure your drinking water is stored in a Thermos to prevent freezing solid. Spend the remainder of the day in relaxation and retire early to ensure your 'human batteries' are fully charged for Kilimanjaro's ultimate challenge.
- Hiking: 6-8 hours
- Overnight Altitude: 15,430 feet.

Day 6: Kibo Huts – Gilman’s Point – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Huts

Awake around midnight for a light meal before venturing into the night. The challenging terrain, strewn with loose stones, proves to be the most demanding part of the ascent for many. The goal is to reach Gilman’s Point at dawn, allowing you to reach Uhuru Peak—the highest point on Kibo—shortly after sunrise. Take a brief pause at Gilman’s Point to savor the magnificent view before proceeding along the crater rim to Uhuru. The final stretch of the climb features a steady incline.

Depending on the season, you may encounter snow on the last part of the route to Uhuru Peak—the summit of Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa. Upon reaching the peak at an altitude of 5,895 meters above sea level, revel in your accomplishment, enjoy the breathtaking view, and capture a lasting memory with a photo in front of the Uhuru Peak sign.

Commence the descent to Kibo Huts, which passes remarkably quickly. At Kibo Huts, take a well-deserved lunch break before continuing to Horombo Huts, where a much-needed night's sleep awaits.

- Hiking: 4-5 hours
- Overnight Altitude: ~12,205 feet.

Day 7: Horombo Huts – Marangu Gate – Arusha

Embark on the final descent through the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Enjoy lunch and bid farewell to the mountain crew before departing Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. Drive back to Arusha for a revitalizing shower and a celebratory dinner.
- Hiking: 5-7 hours
- Overnight Altitude: ~1,843 feet
