6-Day Chogoria Route - Mt Kenya Hiking & Trekking

The Chogoria-Naro Moru route stands out as the most picturesque and captivating path leading to the summit at Lenana Point. The first night of this expedition involves ground camping at Meru Mt. Kenya Lodge Bandas, with the option to upgrade to the Meru Mt. Kenya Lodge Bandas at an additional cost. The descent can be done either via the Naro Moru route, with an overnight stay at Met Station, or via the Sirimon route/Shipton's Camp, with an overnight stop at Old Moses Camp. Breakfast will be served at Shipton Camp at 4200m before continuing the descent through Mackinders Valley.

Day 1: Nairobi to Chogoria

Town Commence your journey with a pick-up from your Nairobi hotel at 8 am and transfer to north to Chogoria town in a public shuttle van (Private transfer can be arranged on request), situated on the eastern side of the mountain, for lunch. Spend the afternoon leisurely exploring the town to acclimatize. Dinner and overnight stay in Chogoria Town at Lizlo Hotel or Chogoria Transit Motel, 2000m, including lunch and dinner.

Day 2: Chogoria to Mount Meru Bandas - 4 hours, 16km walk, 950m ascent

Following breakfast, a vehicle will transport you to the bamboo forest clearance, 16km from where the hiking on the Chogoria route begins. This 16km trek through the forest along a dirt road, which can be muddy at times, lasts for approximately 4 hours, leading you to Mount Meru Bandas campsite at 2950m for lunch. In the afternoon, take a leisurely walk around the camp to explore the nearby scenic areas. Dinner and overnight camping at Meru Mount Kenya Bandas campsite, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 3: Mount Meru Bandas to Road Head Camp - 3 hours, 9km, 350m ascent

After breakfast, the hiking trail follows the track through giant heather and forest, ascending to the Chogoria road head. From there, the path descends to cross a stream before following the broad ridge to the east of the Gorges Valley. You will reach Road Head Campsite in approximately 3-4 hours. Dinner and overnight camping at Road Head Camp at 3300m. There's also an option to go via Lake Ellis, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 4: Road Head to Mintos Hut - 4 hours, 12km

Following breakfast, continue along the track through giant heather and forest, ascending to the Chogoria road head. The path then descends to cross a stream before following the broad ridge to the east of the Gorges Valley. You will arrive at Mintos Hut campsite, situated at 4200m, in approximately 4 hours. Dinner and overnight at Mintos Camp, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 5: Mintos to Point Lenana (Pt Lenana) to Met Station - 11-12 hours, 29km, 785m ascent, 1985m descent

Begin your ascent shortly after midnight, around 2 am, heading towards the main peaks of Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana. After an hour, the trail divides above a flat green area known as Temple Fields. Arrive at Point Lenana (the only trekking peak) at 6:30 am. Capture photographs and celebrate at the summit, then descend from the trekking peak via the Naro Moru route. Alternatively, you can choose to descend via the Sirimon Route and Shipton's Camp, reaching Shipton Camp at 4200m, and spend the night at Old Moses Camp. Hike down to Mackinders for breakfast. Continue your descent, trekking to Camp at Met Station at 3000m for dinner and overnight rest, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Day 6: Met Station to Naro Moru Gate to Nairobi - 3 hours, 9km, 400m descent

After breakfast, descend through the rainforest by hiking for approximately 3 hours, covering 9km to reach Naro Moru Gate at 2,600m. From the gate, you will connect with your transportation to Naro Moru Town for lunch. Then, proceed with an onward transfer back to Nairobi, arriving at approximately 3 pm, including breakfast and lunch.
