4 Days Naro Moru Route -
Climbing Mount Kenya

Naro Moru Route - Mount Kenya Climb
Camping $580 | Cabin/ Hut Cost $700

Commencing from the town of Naro Moru, the initial stretch of the journey guides you along a gravel road that meanders through agricultural lands for approximately 13 kilometers until you reach the edge of the forest. Afterward, you'll traverse another 5 kilometers, leading you to the entrance gate of the park at an elevation of 2400 meters. From this point, it's an additional 8 kilometers to the road-head and the Met Station Hut, situated at an altitude of 3000 meters, where you'll spend the night and acclimatize. Although this route may not offer particularly breathtaking views, it boasts some of the finest tourist accommodations. While most climbers kick off their ascent at the park gate, it's also possible to drive a vehicle up to the Met Station at 3050 meters. Notable challenges along this route include navigating a marshy area and tackling a very steep, loose gravel trail during the ascent

Day 1: Nairobi to Meteorological Station (3-4 hrs, 10km, 400m ascent)

Depart from Nairobi early at 8 am. Transfer to Mount Kenya National Park at Naro Moru Gate for registration, which marks the start of the hike at 2600m. Follow the park track from the gate, which runs along the ridge between the Northern and Southern Naro Moru valleys. The hike through the forest is pleasant and relatively easy. About two-thirds of the way up, after crossing a bridge, you'll have beautiful views of the Northern Naro Moru valley to the north. The day's trek concludes at Met Station campsite (3,000m) where you'll have dinner and rest overnight. Meal Plan (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Day 2: Met Station to Mackinders Camp (5-6 hrs, 10km, 1200m ascent)

Enjoy an early morning breakfast, then head uphill on the track, passing the radio mast on your right after about half an hour. The path transitions into a trail, and after another 30 minutes, you'll leave the forest behind and enter the moorland. Here, you'll encounter the infamous vertical bog, which can vary from damp to extremely muddy, depending on recent rainfall. Continue until the terrain improves, and you'll reach a fork with views overlooking Teleki Valley. Follow this to reach Mackinders Camp at 4,200m. Dinner and overnight stay at Mackinders Campsite. Meal Plan (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Day 3: Mackinders Camp to Point Lenana to Met Station (8-10 hrs, 11km, 785m ascent)

The typical approach involves an early start at 2 am to reach Point Lenana by sunrise at 6:30 am, taking about 4 hours. After witnessing the sunrise, descend to Mackinders Camp for breakfast (2 hours), then continue the 4-hour hike back to Met Station campsite for dinner and overnight rest. Meal Plan (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Day 4: Met Station to NaroMoru to Nairobi (3 hrs, 9km, 400m descent)

After breakfast, descend through the rainforest, covering a distance of 9km, until you reach Mount Kenya National Park's Naro Moru Gate at 2,600m. Here, you will connect with your transport back to Nairobi, with an estimated arrival time of 3 pm. Meal Plan (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner).
